Abstract
Anal fistulas in infants are poorly understood. A high incidence of recurrence has been at tributed of a congenital abnormality of the anal crypts. To verify this hypothesis, we reviewed 18 cases of anal fistulas seen in children less than 2
years
of
age and treated between 1980 and 1994. All patients were male with mean age of 11.3 months. Eighty nine percent have had previous anorectal abscesses. The operative management included fistulotomy in 10 patients and fistulectomy in 8.
Cryptotomies
besides fistula excision were not performed. Follow-up was available in 16 patients for mean length of 4 months. There was no specific complications. One recurrence was observed and none of last patients had fistula-related complaints at the last
vist.
Neither cryptotomy nor antibiotic prophylaxis seem to be necessary and a good results could be expected with little chance of recurrence.
